Hearts & Flowers - Planning a Tropical
Island Themed Wedding
by Deborah Lewis
Years ago, back in the 80's, there was a TV show that used to come on that I really enjoyed, it was
called Fantasy Island. I'm sure most of you remember it with it's romantic story lines and the
mysterious Mr Rourke and his side kick Tattoo who were always endeavoring to fulfill the fantasies of
their numerous guests. Truth be said what I enjoyed most about the show was it's breath taking
scenery, majestic waterfalls, lush tropical landscape and beautiful flowers. If you looked closely, one
tropical plant always stood out, the lovely, heart shaped Anthurium or flamingo flower as it is often
called. Anthuriums have heart shaped waxy leaves that come in a myriad of colors ranging from deep
red to pink, white, yellow, orange or green. In the center is a fleshy spike called a spadix that juts out.
If you are looking for a unique idea for a tropical island themed wedding you might consider making
the beautiful Anthurium the centerpiece of your wedding. Eye catching and exotic, it will give your
wedding a truly tropical feel. Let's now get down to the nitty gritty of some great ideas on how to
incorporate this exquisite plant into your nuptials.
Location & Decoration -
When you are planning a tropical island wedding your first idea might be to make it a beach wedding,
but who said it has to be on the beach? I always loved the idea of getting married next to a flowing
waterfall or a small secluded cove complete with a floral arch or overhang. This is where you can add
in the gorgeous anthuriums. Overlay palms, white orchids and of course exotic Anthuriums. Here is
where you might be careful as the Anthuriums are already so eye popping they might over shadow any
other blooms. You can also have a lovely arch at a beach wedding also, the location is entirely up to
you, but remember, find some place unique. After you have created a lovely arch place potted
Anthuriums all along the bridal walk and alter.
Table Centerpieces -
Anthuriums and tropical flowers are known and beloved for there exotic beauty and fragrance. When
planning centerpieces for your reception tables, you might display lovely vases or baskets and fill
them with sprays of orchids and Anthuriums. Red or pink Anthuriums are most popular and stand out
with there exquisite coloring. Other centerpieces might include hibiscus, gingers and bird of paradise,
that you can mix in, but be careful, Anthuriums will always steal the show.
Tropical Wedding Favors -
There is an endless choice of wedding favors to choose from for weddings, but for a Tropical wedding
you might choose bottle stoppers, jars of personalized honey, key to my heart bottle openers or love
measuring spoons. Depending on the color of your favor boxes, top off with exotic orchids, hibiscus or
fragrant plumeria as decor along with gauze ribbons. Your favors will be a true stand out your guests
will adore.
Lua or Wedding Feast -
Here are some delicious ideas when planning a tropical island wedding feast. Along the wedding
reception walls add tiki torches and palm fans. Place bamboo place mats on the tables along with
bamboo forks and knives. Island food is delicious so go ahead and splurge, your guests will be
thrilled. When planning your reception menu, include rum whiskey, tequila. Mixed drinks can be as
extravagant as you like with Margaritas, banana or strawberry Daiquiris, smoothies and Pina Coladas.
Offer up in coconut cups adorned with tiny umbrellas. Of course always include cut up fresh fruit such
as pineapple, mango and papaya. If you truly want the island taste, offer roasted pig, Teriyaki chicken,
coconut shrimp, lobster, grilled swordfish crusted with macadamia nuts. Other dishes might include
rice pilaf, poi, sweet potatoes mashed with coconut, Kona coffee and pineapple upside down cake.
Your menu choices are up to you.
I hope I have given you some great ideas for a tropical island delight with Anthuriums being a focal
point when planning your wedding. Go for color and unique ideas, this is your time so make happen.
