The silent movie era was a unique time in American history. The early twentieth century was a
time of immense change, that culminated into World War 1 and the Roaring twenties, an exciting
time to be sure. Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks, Theda Bara, forever known as the Vamp, the
romantic Rudolph Valentino and Lon Chaney, the man of a thousand faces were just a few of the
exciting stars to dance across the silver screen and into our hearts. Silent movies used body
language and facial expressions in dramatic fashion.

If you are a bride who loves this romantic and exciting time in our nation's history then an ideal
theme for a wedding would be to become a silent movie bride with all the drama and appeal of
this exciting era. You may opt for a Mary Pickford look complete with long sausage curls or
transform into a flapper, complete with feather boa and dropped waistline.

Wedding Attire:

Wedding attire during this era was simplistic and elegant. Brides wore straight gowns, no big
frills, or a fashionable dropped waist dress with a short bob, head band and seamed stockings.
Orange blossoms were popular as head pieces as were long, veils flowing from caplets.
Bridesmaids carried the flapper ensemble further by using ostrich fans, silver headbands and
long, beaded necklaces. Grooms and groomsmen wore zoot suits with fedora hats or double
breasted suits complete with top hats, white gloves and canes.

Flowers and Decor:

Plan on having your reception at a night club or hotel decorated to resemble an old Hollywood
night club. Strategically park small, rounded tables across the room laden with bowls of calla
lilies, roses and orchids. Adorn the walls with famous silent stars of the era like Mabel Normand,
Clara Bow, Charlie Chaplin, Rudolph Valentino and Rod la Rocque to name just a few. Hire a
jazz band and sultry singer, hang long strands of beads in the doorways, set up a smokey bar
with lots of ice and have your guests come dressed in silent movie era clothes and costumes.
Then toast to your love with champagne, mixed drinks, whiskey and other assorted liquors. Just
for fun, decorate an old tub, fill with ice and plenty of refreshments. Duke Ellington, Irving Berlin
and Ella Fitzgerald were popular singers of this era. Offer beaded necklaces, ostrich fans or old
movie posters as favors. Place movie clapboards on tables to serve as place card holders. For
the gentlemen, you might offer silver lighters, cigarette holders or business card cases as favors
for an especially elegant touch.

Wedding Feast:

Just like today, people in this era loved good food. Favorite menu choices for a wedding might
include, filet mignon, roasted lamb in mint sauce, barbeque, fried chicken, cucumber or
watercress sandwiches. Waldorf salads, carrots and potatoes, fried tomatoes and shrimp
cocktail are some food ideas you might consider. For dessert, a simple wedding cake with other
dishes of cherry cheesecake, raspberry mousse and strawberries with cream are yummy and
easy choices.

Transportation:

As your getaway car for your honeymoon you might select an old model T, a Whippet Roadster or
a Cadillac Coupe. Decorations might include old tin cans or confetti tied to the bumper.

The silent movie era was an exciting and glamorous time to live, if you love this time period then
by all means find everything you can, old pictures, magazines and books to guide you in
decorating and making this the wedding of your dreams.
