The Making of a 1940s Hollywood Glamour Bride

1940s Hollywood was a romantic and glamorous era. Clark Gable and Cary Grant lit up the silver
screen and made our hearts skip a beat in movies like Notorious and Strange Cargo, while
beautiful starlets Rita Hayworth and Lana Turner cavorted with lovers we could only imagine
meeting in our dreams. If you are a fancier of old Hollywood movies like I am then you might
consider becoming a glamorous 1940s Hollywood bride.

Wedding Location -

The first thing you might consider is where you are going to hold the wedding. Prime locations
might be an old movie set, theatre or a hotel ball room or canteen. If you loved swashbucklers like
the Black Swan how about an old pirate ship or a secluded cove or beach. Choosing the right
location is important for setting the stage and lending atmosphere to your event.

Wedding Attire -

When shopping for a bridal gown be sure to look for satin or silk A line gowns with puffed
shoulders and sweetheart necklines. During the forties, sleeves were long and fitted and came to
a point on the hands. Veils fell to the elbow or fingertips. Bridesmaids wore more demur dresses
and were usually shorter than the bride's gown. You might prefer for your bridesmaids and maid of
honor to wear long gowns which is acceptable. Hair was often rolled up and and pinned. If you
prefer loose, flowing hair, consider the famous Veronica Lake peekaboo style. Grooms in the
forties wore single or double breasted suits or if they were in the military they might dress in
uniform. Remember, during the first part of the 1940s WW2 was in full swing. At ritzy or more
extravagant weddings, men wore elegant black tails and tuxedos.

Wedding Reception Decor and Flowers -

Once you've decided on location you will want to pick out decorations and flowers for the reception,
this can be alot of fun. During this era, glittering chandeliers lit up ballrooms and supper clubs and
added charm. When starting to decorate, drape tables in white linen table cloths with lamps or
candles. Popular flowers for centerpieces and bouquets might include orange blossoms, Lily of
the Valley, roses and orchids. Arrange tables around a dance floor and hire a swing band or
orchestra to play songs from this era. Popular singers were Frank Sinatra, Glen Miller and Duke
Ellington. Romantic songs were "Taking a Chance on Love", "Orange Blossom Lane" and
"Sentimental Journey" to name just a few.

Wedding Favors-

After you have sent out invitations to guests it's time to choose wedding favors and gifts for
bridesmaids and grooms. Wine bottle stoppers, key chains, champagne bucket timers and
martini candles. For your bridesmaids, choose a vintage compact, silk fan or silver sentiment
bracelet. Groomsmen will enjoy flasks, pocket tools or business card cases.

Menu Choices -

Reception dinners back in the forties Started with cocktails that mixed with Bourbon, champagne,
Tom Collins and whiskey. Dinner often included finger sandwiches, salmon steaks, barbeque,
lobster and shrimp. These dishes were often served with mushrooms, salads, baked acorn
squash and creamed asparagus, relishes and Duck in orange sauce. Dessert included
Strawberry Ice, Vanilla Ice Cream, cake and Coffee. Wedding cakes were often simple confections
that might include red velvet, coconut cake or simply vanilla cream.

Transportation -

For your 1940s transportation consider an old vintage car like the Packard Clipper, Crown Imperial
or a Rolls Royce. To find these cars, call a limousine company or museum. You might also try
event planners. Decorate with old tin cans or confetti.
